According to the geologists Ladakh was once the basin of a vast sea. The folding of the sea bed due to collision of two lands caused it to rise resulting in form of Himalayas and the Ladakh region.

BEST TIME TO VISIT

The region was opened for tourism only few years ago. Best time to visit Ladakh is from June to September. The snow and rigorous winter in Ladakh is much that it is landlocked between the months of November and June.

PLACES AROUND LEH LADAKH

Leh Palace - The palace was built in the 17th century and had nine storeys ,Leh has quite a few interesting places on offer.

Zanskar Range - The Zanskar range lies to the North of the main Himalaya . It forms the backbone of Ladakh south of the Indus River , stretching from the ridges beyond Lamayuru in the west acrossthe Zanskar region, where it is divided from the main Himalaya by the Stod and Tsarap valleys, the populated districts of the Zanskar valley.

Chamba Temple - One place definitely worth walking through the putrid smelling puddles to visit, however, is the Chamba temple.

Shanti Stupa - A relatively new addition to the rocky skyline around Leh is the toothpaste white Shanti Stupa above Changspa village, 3-km west of the bazaar.

Alchi - Driving past on the nearby Srinagar-Leh highway, you'd never guess that this is one of the most significant historical sites in Asia.

Stok Place - Stok Palace is the residential palace of the royal family and descendants of King Sengge Namgyal.

CLIMATE

The weather in Leh tends to be extremely arid, with only 90mm of rain annually, and cold. There are only two main seasons in Leh: summer (March to September) and winter (October to February).
